Security information for the Capitol Complex:
Capitol visitor policies are designed to keep visitors and staff safe and secure and to preserve the facilities and historic building and grounds for generations to come.
Please be aware of security measures at the Capitol and plan accordingly. There are guards and metal detectors at every entrance to the buildings you will be entering to attend your lobby visits, including the Russell, Hart, and Dirksen Senate Buildings and the Cannon, Rayburn, Ford, and Longworth House Buildings. Similar to an airport, the time it takes you to go through security will vary depending on how many people are in front of you. It may take two minutes or it may take 30 minutes. To expedite your security experience, do not bring any of the following items with you as they are prohibited:
- Aerosol Containers
- Any pointed object like knitting needles, letter openers, etc. (Pens and pencils are permitted)
- Any bag larger than 14" wide x 13" high x 4" deep
- Cans and bottles
- Electric stun guns, martial arts weapons or devices
- Food or beverages of any kind
- Guns, replica guns, ammunition, and fireworks
- Knives of any size
- Mace and pepper spray
- Non-aerosol spray (Prescriptions for medical needs are permitted)
- Razors and box cutters
Make sure that if you have a scheduled visit with a Member of Congress or Congressional staff that you leave enough time to get through security and reach the office on time. Keep in mind that there will be hundreds of other people from states also trying to access the building at the same time and therefore, the process may be delayed.
